Department of Labor & Industry Outlines Bonding Requirements for State of Minnesota

This information was obtained from the Minnesota Department of Labor & Industry's website, located at www.doli.state.mn.us.

This website provides all the information needed by water conditioning installers and contractors regarding requirements, license exams and bonding, as well as application forms for the bond and exams. Refer to this website when you have questions regarding requirements for water conditioning installations in the State of Minnesota.

"Anyone contracting to do water conditioning work must provide evidence of a $3,000 performance bond or a $25,000 plumbing code compliance bond. The bonds may be filed with the Secretary of State, or if the work is performed solely within a city having an ordinance requiring a $3,000 performance bond or the $25,000 plumbing code compliance bond, the bond may be filed with that city. The bond would only be recognized in the city it has been filed. If filed with the Secretary of State, the bond is in effect statewide.

The bond shall be renewed annually, and would be in effect for all work done by that contractor during that year. A $25,000 Plumbing Code Compliance Bond shall be given to the state if the plumbing services contracted for include installation or servicing of plumbing other than that defined in Minnesota Rules pertaining to water conditioning."

Bonds given to the state are for the calendar year, with an annual filing fee of $40 required to accompany all bond applications. Every person who contracts to do plumbing work within the state - whether a licensed plumber or not - is required by the state to have the plumbing bond meeting the requirements of this law.

If you have questions regarding the bond requirements, visit the Department's website.
